Community Leaders Celebrate Groundbreaking For The New Clemens Food Group Fresh Pork Processing Facility

Coldwater, MI – July 23, 2015 – Local and state officials today joined the Clemens Food Group  to celebrate the ground breaking of the new fresh pork processing facility located in Coldwater, MI.  In an event themed “Building For The Future”, the emphasis was on the long-term impact the project will have for the community, state, and family businesses associated with the project.

“Today’s ground breaking represents the next chapter beginning for all those involved with this project.” said Doug Clemens – Clemens Family Corporation CEO.  “Bringing multiple generations of family businesses together with this great community is truly something to be celebrated.  We are thankful to our producer partners who had this original vision, and appreciate the support of the community leadership and Gray Construction in helping to make it a reality.“

In attendance were multiple generations of each of the partnering family businesses, community members, Coldwater city and township officials, Branch county officials, as well as representatives from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) and the Michigan Department of Agriculture & Rural Development.

Announced in December of 2014, the 550,000 square-foot fresh pork processing facility will be located between Jonesville Road and  Newton Road in Coldwater, MI.  It is expected to generate up to $255.7 million in private investment. Additionally, the project is supported by $12.5 million in Michigan Strategic Fund - Community Development Block Grant funds for infrastructure improvements, land acquisition, workforce development and on-the-job training for the new development. The project is projected to create 800 jobs.

The project remains on schedule to begin operating in late 2017.  The continued collaboration between state and local officials, community leaders, and the business partners involved was cited as the main reason the project has remained on schedule.

“The energy, excitement, and commitment around this project has been evident throughout the process.” said Ernie Meily – Clemens Food Group VP of Community Development.  “We’ve had opportunities to engage with the community on a number of levels, and the guidance and encouragement has been invaluable to our progress thus far.  With this continued support, we are confident that this new facility will be a meaningful part of the community for years to come.”

A website has been established to communicate ongoing updates regarding the project.  It can be found by visiting CFGcoldwater.com.
