2020 has proven to be one of the most challenging years in recent memory for us as an organization, as individuals and for our nation. We have struggled to react to the changing landscape that has come from the novel COVID-19 pandemic, and recent events have shaken us as we consider the critical issue of racial injustice.
It is crucial to take a step back and take a moment to reflect on society and our place within it. This is precisely what we have been doing these last couple of days. The recent deaths of George Floyd and Ahmaud Arbery have reminded us all of the abundant and abhorrent racism that still plagues this nation. Our thoughts and prayers go out to their families and friends. The topic of racial injustice and racism is never an easy one to bring up, and yet, it is necessary. As the old adage goes: to remain silent is to be complicit.
As a company, our core values of ethics, integrity, and stewardship, and our lifelong effort to follow in the teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ, have compelled us to build a talented and diverse workforce; however, we recognize that we have more work to do in order to directly affect diversity within our own organization. And that is why we are committed to doing better by our Black team members, customers, and partners.
We are working on creating a group within our organization with the purpose of preparing and supporting our Black team members through their careers here, and increasing the awareness of our different experiences. We hear you. We see you. Know that you are valued and not alone. As we move forward, let us always remember to treat one another with kindness, respect, and love. We leave you with a quote from the incomparable Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. that we hope will inspire a brighter, more unified future:
“I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality...I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word.”
Over the past 125 years, our responsibility has grown from feeding the neighborhood to feeding the world. This is why we remain committed to providing safe, wholesome, quality pork products for you and your families during this challenging time.
We are grateful to have such a dedicated team capable of gracefully working through these unprecedented challenges. Our team’s commitment creates a sense of duty and pride to make sure you, your families, and the millions of other people we serve get the products you need.
Today, the neighborhood, the state, the country, and the world need the food that we produce. Our business is deemed essential and in this time of need, we are called on to be both focused and safe in our cause. Our commitment to being a responsible member of the community will not waver.
